Turtle’s 1890 Social Centre: Kirsten + Kendall
Kirsten and Kendall had a gorgeous wedding at Turtle’s 1890 Social Centre! Winter weddings are always beautiful and challenging! It was about -10 on this Minnesota January day. We had to do all of the outside portraits really fast so we stayed warm but it was worth it!
As told by Kirsten
How did you meet and fall in love?
Kendall and I actually worked together at the Electric Fetus record store, and we were friends for a while first. We didn’t see each other for a while after I left that job, but we ran into each other at a concert and decided to hang out! The rest is history.
How did you choose your venue?
Finding the venue was serendipitous. My mom actually found Turtle’s 1890 Social Centre while scrolling through the western suburbs on Google maps. The venue fit both of our aesthetics and our meager budget. It worked out perfectly!
What were your thoughts leading up to your wedding day?
We were in the middle of a few life transitions at the time (moving, buying a home, etc.) so we were juggling a lot! I think we were both excited to cut loose with our friends and family, and spend such an exciting day together!
What was your favorite part of the day?
We have such a hard time choosing a favorite moment because it was all so perfect. But I think we both agree that the best point in the day was having a beer with just our best friends at the bar next door while waiting for the processional. It was so great to just relax for a moment and spend time with the people we chose to be in our wedding party, and we got to take a breath and spend a few minutes together before our giving our vows. Then we opened the doors to the venue to walk down the aisle, and it was just so great to see the faces of everyone we love, the beautiful flowers, and our parent’s expectant expressions! It was just a perfect moment.
What is each of your favorite images from your wedding and why?
Kendall loves this one because he says, “I think it captures our personalities perfectly. It’s just a midwestern moment, so it feels like we’re paying homage to our families and where we grew up.”
I love this picture of our first dance. It was just a beautiful moment. We look so happy, and we both had such a great time at the dance.
Likewise, the final picture reminds us of how much fun our dance was! Emmerlee so perfectly captured the personalities of our guests, and it’s so fun to look back on.
Is there anything that you would change?
We would change NOTHING. We loved every moment, we were so thrilled with each of our choices, and we love looking back on it now. Well, we’d slow time down if we could. And maybe videotape the ceremony…
What is your best advice to anyone planning a wedding?
Kendall: Don’t stress out. Don’t blow your budget. Trust your gut.
Kirsten: We decided to just make sure our guests would have fun, and it was such a blast! We wanted a party to celebrate our future, so we cut back on budget for the dress, table decor, etc. It ended up simple and beautiful, and it was so much fun. We wouldn’t change anything.
