As a wedding photographer, many of my most beloved wedding images were the images I took at golden hour – the lighting is super easy to work with and creates the most beautiful photos that I know you and your partner will cherish forever.

What Are Golden Hour Photos?

The golden hour is the time of day when the sun is low on the horizon, and it typically occurs anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes before sunrise or sunset. It’s a favorite time for photographers to plan their sessions, and as a wedding photographer, I always recommend to my couples to add time to their wedding timeline for a golden hour session. 

Why? Because golden hour creates truly stunning images that have a warm, soft glow, and your images will have an ethereal aesthetic. Lighting at midday can have harsh lighting and create unflattering shadows, whereas golden hour lighting is pure magic – it softens shadows and brings out the best colors. 

Whether you’re having an early morning elopement or a wedding with a reception in the evening, you can include golden hour wedding photos in your day! By the way, if you take your golden hour photos in the morning, you’ll also have what’s called blue hour, and it is also a magical time of the day. Blue hour just before sunrise will add cool tones such as blues, purples, and pinks to your images. 

On the other hand, during a sunset golden hour session, you will have a plethora of colors to work with, such as pinks, oranges, yellows, etc. It all depends on the different hues created by the setting sun.

Should You Take Golden Hour Wedding Photos?

My answer? Definitely yes! Golden hour images will add so much depth and beauty to your final wedding gallery. Throughout your wedding day (especially if your ceremony is outdoors), the lighting can be a bit intense, making it difficult to see and creating more shadows, but golden hour is the exact opposite. 

Another reason I suggest to my couples to take golden hour photos is that this is a private moment for just the two of you. Throughout your wedding day, there’s going to be so much going on, but this is a quiet, intimate moment to share with your partner where you can slow down and take everything in and just be with each other. 

5 Tips on How to Get the Best Golden Hour Wedding Photos

Here are my pro tips on how you can achieve the best golden hour wedding photos possible: 

Plan enough time in your wedding timeline 

To achieve stunning golden hour photos, we will need enough time to work with the lighting – if we’re too late, we will miss the best lighting during this time frame. Typically, we only need 15-20 minutes to make magic happen, but we will need to time it right. 

I work with my couples to fit golden hour photos into their wedding timelines, so I don’t want you to worry about having to figure out how to do it on your own! I’ll also help you with scouting the best location at your wedding venue for these photos because location is super important for golden hour photos and isn’t something that should be overlooked. 

Discuss golden hour photos with your wedding photographer beforehand 

Make sure that you mention to your wedding photographer that you want to take golden hour wedding photos! If we work together, I’ll ask you about them, but to err on the side of caution (especially if these photos are something you love), ask your photographer about them and how they’ll help fit them into your wedding day. 

Plan and communicate what’s happening with your guests 

Have you ever been to a wedding and everyone is asking where the couple is and is out looking for them? To avoid this happening, it’s best to plan a break for your guests around the time you want to take the photos. This way, you don’t miss out on anything or have someone who is searching the wedding venue for you and your partner. 

You can also communicate with your guests (or have your DJ do it) that you’ll be out for a bit, taking photos too. Speaking of communication, make sure that your other wedding vendors know what is happening as well, so there’s no confusion. 

Don’t worry if the weather doesn’t cooperate

Just like you can’t predict in advance when you select your wedding date, you also won’t be able to predict on if you’ll have a perfect golden hour sunrise or sunset. Even if the lighting isn’t ideal during your session, remember you can still get beautiful photos. 

Embrace movement

The best golden hour photos are the ones that look natural. These photos don’t have to be stiff or overly posed. Instead, embrace movement – walk hand in hand with your partner, run hand in hand down a hill together, dance together, etc. This will create truly stunning and captivating images.

Let’s break down the pros and cons of doing a first look before your wedding ceremony

The topic of whether to do a wedding day first look or not is hotly debated. Should you stick with superstition, and wait for that special moment down the aisle to see each other? Or is it better to grab a private moment together, before all the madness, and capture some beautiful photos? For me, honestly, I believe it’s a worthwhile break from tradition. And that’s because I’ve had the privilege of capturing so many powerful wedding day first look shots for my Minnesota couples!

In my experience, couples love getting the chance to spend a few precious moments together before the ceremony. To laugh about the last 24 hours they’ve spent apart. To share a few joyful tears. And create the most natural, carefree wedding photography!

But is planning a first look for your wedding day right for you? Let’s find out!

What is a First Look?

A first look normally takes place around two hours before the wedding ceremony, and gives the marrying couple a chance to see each other in private, away from the wedding party.

I typically scope out a suitably quiet location with my couples in advance. And while photographing them, I’ll usually try to keep my distance. Just to allow couples the opportunity to experience a genuine moment with one another.

The Pro’s of Doing a First Look on Your Wedding Day?

Let’s take a look at how a first look shoot could benefit not just your wedding album, but also your big day experience.

Calm the Nerves

I’m sure you know by now that planning a wedding is a wild ride. And your excitement/nerves will only intensify as the celebration approaches. On the big day itself, I’ve seen firsthand just how cathartic couples find it is to just stop for a second. To breathe and to share their thoughts with the only other person who really knows how they’re feeling.

If you know you’re someone who struggles with anxiety, or you feel that stress might be an issue on the day. Plan moments away from everyone into your wedding schedule, such as a first look, and that’ll help avoid overstimulation.

You’ll Get Amazing Photos

Genuine emotions create the greatest wedding photography. And while taking portraits later in the day is certainly wise, you’ll likely love the shots captured during your first look more. Because the emotions are fresh, and you’re reacting in real time. Something that never fails to look incredible on camera.

If you feel awkward when having your photo taken, a first look will also help. As the raw emotions of the moment will stop you from overthinking what your body is doing. It’ll also give you some invaluable practice in front of the camera, away from onlookers!

No Racing Against the Sunset or Missing Cocktail Hour

If your timeline allows, you should consider scheduling in some golden hour portraits. But having portraits at that time will likely mean you’ll need to leave cocktail hour and all the fun your guests are having! Minimize time spent away by taking the bulk of your wedding portraits during your first look shoot. That way you get some amazing photos, and you won’t miss so much of the party.

You’ll Look Your Very Best

On the big day, you and your partner will obviously look your best in the moments after getting ready. Which is when your first look shots will be captured!

Helps the Wedding Timeline Flow & Improves the Guest Experience

In my experience as a wedding photographer, very few of my Minnesota couples like being whisked away to take portraits during their celebration. It means they miss catching up with friends, and guests often feel a little lost too. Like they’re just waiting around until you come back…

Improve the wedding guest experience, and help the flow of the day by getting as many portraits done and out of the way during your first look. That way you can just glide from ceremony, to cocktail hour, to reception without feeling like the flow of the day has been broken. For both you and your guests.

There’s No Audience

You probably haven’t had professional photos taken too frequently in the past. And while I’ll guide you through every step as your wedding photographer, it’s normal to feel a little awkward in front of the camera. Especially if you’re camera-shy.

First look wedding photos are captured in private, away from the crowds, and any prying eyes. Which typically helps couples to feel more relaxed, and be themselves.

The Con’s of a First Look on Your Wedding Day

Now we’ve explored all the wonderful benefits a first look shoot can offer, let’s consider some of the downsides.

Breaking with Wedding Tradition

If you’ve always pictured seeing your partner for the first time on the aisle, and are sentimental about savoring this traditional moment. Then maybe a first look on your wedding day isn’t right for you.

Your Family Will Miss the Moment

Traditionally, every guest present at the wedding ceremony sees a couple’s first look on the aisle. Having it in private, before the ceremony, denies them that joy, and your chance of sharing it with them. This can be upsetting for some couples, especially those who are incredibly close to their family and friends.

Some Feel the Pressure to React

Even the most excited couples find it difficult to display that genuine emotion during a semi-staged situation such as a first look. Some feel expected to react in a certain way, or perhaps be more emotional than they would naturally feel.

Compromises – Plan a First Look that’s Right for Your Wedding Day

Following tradition may not be right for you, but breaking it altogether could be a step too far. Let’s find an alternative to a first look that works for your wedding day.

Do a ‘First Something Else’

You’re not allowed to see each other before the wedding ceremony, right? But nobody said anything about holding hands, hearing each other’s voices, or receiving a letter from each other. There are so many imaginative ways to recreate the first look shot that don’t involve actually seeing each other. Here are a few of my favorites:

• Exchange letters before the ceremony to read privately, also works well as narration on your wedding video.
• Record a message for each other to listen to while getting ready.
• Share a curated playlist with each other. Songs that you know your partner will love to listen to during the final few moments of wedding preparations.
• Hold hands around a corner, or through a wall without peeking.
• Speak to each other, but wear blindfolds or stay on opposite sides of a door.
• Surprise each other with a gift, either in person or privately.

Share the First Look with Your Family

If you’re super close with your family, then why not include them in your first look! Share the magic and involve parents, close relatives, and your wedding party. Either by allowing them to witness the first look between you and your partner, or having one with them! I’ve captured some adorable bride and father first looks in the past, and they are always tearjerkers!

Bringing your closest friends and family together for the big reveal(s) helps to add further emotional moments to the day, and should avoid loved one’s feeling left out.

As a Minneapolis-St. Paul, wedding photographer, I wanted to create an easy-to-follow guide to help you prepare for your engagement session, including tips on what to wear from what to bring to your session. 

Let’s dive into what you need to know.  

How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photos

Here are my top tips on how to prepare for your engagement session: 

Include a favorite activity 

While I love engagement sessions in the park, downtown, and other locations, I also suggest adding a favorite activity to your session. This will help make the session feel more natural and put you and your partner at ease. 

Plus, there are many fun activities we could add, such as visiting your favorite coffee shop, browsing books at the local bookstore, or playing games at the arcade. Anything you and your partner enjoy doing together is perfect for your session! 

Book professional hair and makeup 

This isn’t an absolute must, but I recommend booking professional hair and makeup for my couples for a couple of different reasons, one of which is that it serves as a good trial run for your wedding. 

Also, it takes one less thing off your to-do list on the day of your engagement session, and it’s a great confidence booster! 

Get your ring cleaned 

This is a big one! We want your ring to sparkle in your session, and you might be surprised by how quickly your ring can get dirty. It is best practice to have it polished beforehand.  

Don’t show up to your session on an empty stomach 

Drink plenty of water before your session and make sure you have something to eat – even if you’re nervous. Trust me, you’ll have more energy and a much more enjoyable experience when you’re not hungry.

I’d also recommend bringing water with you to your session, especially if you are going to be walking around outdoors. You can even pack some small snacks like granola bars to snack on throughout the photoshoot!

Bring significant items to your session

One of the best ways to make an engagement session feel authentic and truly encapsulate your unique love story is by bringing meaningful items with you, such as jewelry, a favorite book, or a sentimental gift from your partner. 

Additionally, if you have a pet, they can also be a part of your session. Please let me know beforehand, and I would personally recommend bringing a trusted friend/family member to take care of them when they’re not in front of the camera. 

Choosing your outfits 

One of the most common questions my clients ask me is, “What should we wear to our engagement session?” First and foremost, when it comes to choosing outfits, pick whatever you feel most comfortable and confident in. Making sure that you’re comfortable in whatever you choose to wear is essential! It will definitely show up in your photos if you’re uncomfortable. 

Remember, when it comes to choosing your outfits, there are no hard and fast rules that you have to follow. I’ve included here for you some tips to help guide you, but you can take them or leave them. Also, as your engagement photographer, I’m always here to help you choose what to wear, too! 

• Consider your location – I like to recommend to my couples picking outfits that go well color-wise with their engagement session location. Also, make sure you consider the weather and season too, and dress accordingly! 
• Bring two outfits, one that’s more casual and one that’s more formal, to have variety
• Choose a color palette. Picking a color palette before your engagement session makes choosing what to wear a lot easier! I typically suggest to the couples I work with to choose a color palette a) that they like and b) that suits the location they’ve chosen for their session. I’ve found that neutral colors work really well with natural settings. 

Outfit ideas 

When it comes to outfit ideas, I’ve seen it all. I’ve had couples that have worn their favorite sports team jersey, formal wear, and others who have worn cultural outfits. You could also choose to wear matching hats, a favorite band t-shirt, clothes with fringe or sequins, outfits with bright pops of colors – you get to pick! 

Also, when it comes to outfit ideas, another unique idea to try is having a theme for your session and centering your outfits around it! 

Checking the weather beforehand is also super important, especially if you are going to be outside for your session. Layers are your best friend to make sure you aren’t too hot/cold throughout the shoot. 

For colder weather, I would definitely recommend wearing a base layer. Not only will this keep you warm, but it also gives you more flexibility in what you can wear without having to wear a bulky jacket. 

During the warmer months, sticking to lighter, more breathable fabrics is going to make the session so much better. Getting overheated can definitely dampen the mood, and you want to be as comfortable as possible!

Overall, there is no rule for what you can or can’t wear. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your outfit. If you are wearing a new outfit, try wearing it around the house a bit beforehand so you know you can move around in it comfortably. 

While it may seem like a small thing, if you are uncomfortable with what you are wearing or don’t feel totally confident in it, it can be noticeable in the photos. This is a time to really just celebrate you and your partner, so set aside anyone else’s expectations for what you think this session should look like and have fun with it!

Have fun with your session

This is my most important tip I can share with you! Your engagement session isn’t meant to be too serious. This is such an exciting time in your and your partner’s lives, and an engagement session is about celebrating this moment. You and your partner should be enjoying yourselves. 

Another way to make your session even more fun? Turn it into a date afterwards. Head to your favorite restaurant or favorite local spot and enjoy each other’s company! 

Additional engagement session tips

Here are a few more tips I wanted to share with you so you can have the best session possible 

• Bring along a pair of comfortable shoes for your session 
• Moisturize your skin 
• Get a good night’s sleep  
• If you’re doing your own hair/makeup, make sure you do a trial run prior to your session 
• Bring along an essentials kit (first aid items, makeup, hair pins, mini hairspray, etc.)

Engagement Photo Locations in St. Paul

Harriet Island 

Harriet Island is one of the best parks in the Twin Cities, located right on the Mississippi River. There are many beautiful spots throughout the park for engagement photos, whether on the deck by the river with a skyline view behind or in one of the grassier areas. 

Hidden Falls

Another location along the Mississippi River, Hidden Falls, is a gorgeous spot for those seeking an outdoor setting for their engagement photos. Here, you can get beautiful images right in front of the waterfall or utilize other areas of the park for unforgettable photos.

Landmark Center

For incredible architecture as your backdrop, you can’t miss out on the Landmark Center in downtown St Paul. This historic space boasts excellent lighting, stunning staircases, and impressive archways throughout, offering ample opportunities for creative shots.

Summit Avenue

Did you know that St. Paul is home to the longest stretch of Victorian houses in the entire USA? It’s true, and you can witness it right on Summit Avenue! For a stunning architectural backdrop, consider this outdoor location. This is easily one of my favorite areas of the city.

Cathedral of St. Paul

The Cathedral of St. Paul is one of the most beautiful examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the city, making it a very European backdrop for engagement photos. Built in the early 20th century, the church features numerous great places for images, including the front steps.

State Capitol 

The Minnesota State Capitol is a fascinating Beaux-Arts building built in the early 1900s. Featuring columns, a dome, and lots of golden features, engagement photos taken here will feel almost like fine art.

Minnesota Zoo

Do you and your to-be-wed love animals? The Minnesota Zoo is a fun spot for St Paul engagement photos. This is another excellent place to enjoy an activity during your engagement session, as you and your partner can look and interact with the animals.

Minnesota State Fair

If you and your partner want to feel like kids again, then consider having fun at the Minnesota State Fair for your engagement photos! Have fun on the rides, order corn dogs and French fries, and play some carnival games for unique images.

Taylors Falls

Taylors Falls is a dreamy spot with rock cliffs, bluffs, high cliffs, and picturesque views. It also has beautiful hiking trails and is a stunning blend of nature and adventure!

Schaar’s Bluff

Schaar’s Bluff is located a little outside St Paul in Hastings, but it’s worth the trip. This oasis is inside the Spring Lake Park Preserve and features a 2-mile hike through a wooded area near the lake. It’s incredibly peaceful if you’re looking for more laid-back engagement photos!

James J Hill Library

Are you and your partner booklovers? You may want to consider the James J Hill Library as your engagement photo spot. Opened in 1916, this building features beautiful columns, spacious rooms, and numerous cozy hideaway spots that are perfect for engagement photos.

Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls overlooks the Mississippi River and features a stunning waterfall that resembles something out of a storybook. The waterfall is 54 feet tall and has a forest, wildflowers, and limestone bluffs. Plus, the hike isn’t too challenging.

Downtown White Bear 

Another great downtown area to consider is Downtown White Bear, a historic place with unique charm. It’s a bit more quaint if you’re looking to get away from the city’s hustle and bustle, but you still want more of an urban feeling.

Rice Park 

You can find Rice Park right in downtown St Paul. Historically, it was the very first public space in the city. It’s near the Landmark Center and the Saint Paul Hotel! A lot of great architecture surrounds this green space.

Your favorite coffee shop, restaurant, or ice cream shop

If you and your partner have a favorite local restaurant, coffee shop, or ice cream shop, that can also easily be used for your engagement photos! Just order some food and get some cute photos taken.

Downtown Stillwater 

Downtown Stillwater boasts a wealth of historic charm, featuring brick buildings. It’s located right near the water and features numerous murals, unique textures, and a great warehouse area overlooking the water.

Speakeasy

There are many fabulous speakeasies in the St. Paul area. If you want something a little more modern yet cozy with fun lighting, consider choosing a speakeasy for your engagement session. Just order a drink and get comfortable with your partner!

Union Depot

I know, I know – Union Depot is a train station, but believe it or not, it’s a beautiful location for images with you and your to-be-wed. The building features gorgeous hues of yellow, green, and beige, complemented by excellent lighting. It’s great for a location that has both indoor and outdoor spots.

St. Paul Hotel

This 4-star hotel is absolutely breathtaking for outdoor and indoor photos. The St Paul Hotel is excellent if you are looking for something a little more moody with unique architectural shapes. Plus, it’s pretty central in the city!

Mears Park

Situated in the Lowertown area of St. Paul, Mears Park is filled with a lot of beauty. Throughout, there are flower gardens, a stream, and greenery. The flowers add a beautiful touch of color to any engagement photos. 

Dodge Nature Center

For another great outdoor location for engagement photos in St Paul, you can’t miss the Dodge Nature Center! There are so many great spots throughout this area if you and your partner love nature.

Cathedral Hill

Cathedral Hill is a neighborhood in St Paul that’s home to many outdoor spots, museums, coffee shops, and more. It’s truly charming, romantic, and walkable, and by choosing a neighborhood as your engagement photo location, you’ll be able to capture a variety of different backgrounds. 

St. Paul Farmers’ Market

I know what you’re thinking… a farmer’s market? But yes, the St Paul Farmers’ Market is a fun and unique place for quirky engagement photos of you and your partner. This is an excellent location if you want an activity (e.g., shopping) to keep you busy during your session, making you feel more comfortable in front of the lens.

Acorn Park Roseville

Filled with sports fields, walking paths, and green spaces, Acorn Park is a peaceful place if you are looking for St. Paul engagement photo locations. There’s even a playground if you and your partner want to take some fun, goofy photos!

Como Zoo & Conservatory and Como Park

Como Zoo & Conservatory is not only one of my favorite wedding venues, it’s also one of the best engagement photo locations in the St Paul area. The garden here changes plants and flowers with the seasons and has multiple beautiful gardens. It spans over 384 acres and features sculptures, plants, a lake, and more. Nicollet Island Park

Nicollet Island Park is truly an oasis along the Mississippi, boasting extensive green spaces and gardens. Here, you’ll also be right next to Boom Island with great city views and Victorian homes nearby.

Silverwood Park-St Anthony

At Silverwood Park-St. Anthony, you can enjoy a big green space with beautiful lake views. This location is particularly enchanting in the fall, when the leaves change color, making it a lovely spot for engagement photos.

Willow River State Park

Another great park in the area is Willow River State Park. What makes this one unique is that it features a picturesque waterfall and river, plus a beautiful bridge that’s perfect for engagement photos. 

Camping with a cozy fire

Believe it or not, but there are a few parks with campgrounds in the area where you can go camping (like Lebanon Hills Campground or Afton State Park). Pack up all your camping gear for a night away under the stars.

Swimming or fishing in a lake or river 

Last but certainly not least, if you both love the water, you can also consider swimming or fishing in one of the lakes or rivers nearby. This can be so much fun in the warmer months!

As a Minneapolis wedding photographer, I wanted to create an in-depth guide of some of my all-time favorite places for engagement photos in Minneapolis and nearby. One of the best things about Minneapolis is that there are so many beautiful spots to choose from, whether you want to be in the city, in nature, or to have a mix of both during your session.

Here are my favorite places for engagement photos in Minneapolis: 

Mill City Ruins 

Mill City Ruins is a great spot if you’re looking for a location in the heart of Minneapolis. Here you’ll be surrounded by history and immersed in nature. The Mill City Ruins are also right next to the Mississippi and and it’s a favorite for many couples because of how versatile it is. 

Downtown Minneapolis

Downtown Minneapolis is an iconic location to take engagement photos with the eye-catching skyline behind you, or you can take some pictures next to the beloved Aster Cafe or in front of the Guthrie Theater. You’ll find so many different spots for photos as you stroll through the cobblestone streets near St. Anthony Main and down by the waterfront. 

Gold Medal Park 

Gold Medal Park is a 7.5-acre park that has picturesque views of the Mississippi River, the Stone Arch Bridge, the historic milling district, and the Guthrie Theater. It also has a mound with a winding pathway that has scenic views from the top and is a gorgeous urban green space. 

Stone Arch Bridge

The Stone Arch Bridge is a striking bridge that was a former railroad bridge, and it stretches across the Mississippi. It’s considered the only bridge of its kind and is made of granite and limestone, and has views of the downtown skyline. 

Lyndale Park Gardens

The Lyndale Park Gardens contains four gardens, which include the Peace Garden, the Rose Garden, the Perennial Garden, and the Perennial Trial Garden, and each garden has something unique to offer you. There is truly so much to explore here, as the gardens are full of hidden gems and secret oases to wander around.  

Loring Park

Loring Park is a lush green space that has a tranquil lake and a charming bridge. It’s a well-maintained park with a view of the grand Basilica of St. Mary and lots of walking paths that are fun to stroll down hand in hand with your partner. 

Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls is an enchanting wilderness waterfall that overlooks the Mississippi River. There’s a 54-foot waterfall, limestone bluffs, a variety of woods, wildflowers, and breathtaking river overlooks at this spot. Also, the hike up and down is easy to do. 

Nicollet Island Park

Nicollet Island Park is such a cool spot for an engagement session as you’ll be surrounded by gardens, Victorian-era homes, and acres and acres of parkland. It’s also right next to Boom Island and has views of city buildings and St. Anthony Falls. 

Sculpture Garden

The Sculpture Garden is one of the biggest urban sculpture gardens you can find in the country and has 40 permanent art installations that create such a fun and eclectic background for your engagement session. It also has lots of open space to wander around and explore, and offers you something a little different for your session! If you’re at the Sculpture Garden, you can also make the Walker Art Center a part of your session, too! 

Lake Harriet

Lake Harriet is a dreamy spot for a romantic engagement session where you’ll be immersed in nature and have picturesque views. Check out a full engagement session I did at Lake Harriet here. 

W Hotel

W Hotel is a luxury hotel in downtown Minneapolis with a variety of spots within the hotel that offer you and grand and glamorous backdrop for your session. 

Surly Brewing

Surly Brewing is an electric spot with lots of unique spots inside to take photos. It could be the perfect place for your engagement session if you and your partner are beer enthusiasts and love the idea of having an industrial vibe as the setting for your photos. 

Best Engagement Photo Locations Near Minneapolis 

Here’s a round-up of my top recommended locations that you’ll find close to both Minneapolis: 

Acorn Park Roseville

Acorn Park Roseville is a charming park filled with woods and scenic paved walking paths. You’ll also find rolling, grassy hills and a tranquil ambiance with plenty to explore during your engagement session. 

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a 1,200-acre public garden in Chaska, Minnesota, that has miles of wooded trails, stone pathways, and a stunning display of gardens. You’ll encounter vibrant flowers blooming everywhere you look and an abundance of wide-open fields to discover. If you do want to have your engagement session here, you will need to obtain a permit, which you can learn more about here. 

Centennial Lakes

Centennial Lakes Park is a gorgeous park in Edina. The park has so many great spots for your engagement photos and also has prairie space, manicured gardens, and a charming lake, where in the summer you can rent paddleboats and go out onto the water. One of my favorite spots here for photos is the beautiful archways you’ll find at the park entrance. 

Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park

Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park has a tranquil atmosphere and gorgeous views of the Mississippi and the Coon Rapids Dam. It has an extensive trail system, and it’s perfect for an engagement session at any time of the year. 

Silverwood Park – St. Anthony

Silverwood Park is another great park for engagement photos. It’s a large green space with enchanting views of the lake and an art gallery, and there’s a variety of different backdrops that can be a part of your session. 

St. Anthony Main

St. Anthony Main is a historic location with colorful storefronts, cobblestone streets, and scenic views of the city and the Stone Arch Bridge.

Or just head to your favorite place and have your engagement session there – remember, there are no hard and fast rules you absolutely have to follow.

How did you meet and fall in love?

I met my husband at his sister’s wedding. My best friend was invited with a plus one and asked if I had interest in going, with the promise of an open bar and free dinner. What 24 year old would say no?!? That evening I was texting with my mom who had asked if there were any cute guys. I said there is one, but he has two kids. My best friend had just ended a relationship with another man with children and it was quite dramatic. However, as fate would have it, he asked if we could go on a date the next day and the rest was history.

How did you choose your venue?

Whew! I looked at so many venues, 11 to be exact. Since 90% of my guest list would be traveling from out of state so my goal was to provide a “Minnesota experience” at the wedding. I originally had my heart set on renting a very large boat to troll around the lakes while we danced the night away. However, I could not find a boat large enough to fit our large families. I then toured the Winery at Sovereign Estate which was nestled right next to a lake and offered alot of outdoor space. I fell in love instantly, plus the wine is fabulous. After crunching all the numbers on a ridiculously large spreadsheet, I realized this was in my budget and said yes.

Thoughts leading up to your wedding day?

I mostly had thoughts of problem solving and excitement. There are some many details that go into a wedding. I was also challenged with planning the wedding from my current residence of Colorado and thankfully had my mom in Minnesota who could run out to sign a contract in person or handle an issue. However, once the week came and guests started to arrive, it was pure joy. Our families partied for five days straight and I was truly happy.

What was your favorite part of the day?

My favorite part of the day was when we first arrived to the venue after the ceremony. It was just the bridal party and we were all on cloud 9. It even started to rain while the sun was out and we had a ball. The stress of the ceremony was over and we could finally relax and have fun.

What is each of your favorite images from your wedding? What makes it your favorite?

My favorite images are of my and my husband after the ceremony once we first arrive to the venue. See a theme from the question above. You can tell in the pictures that we were elating with joy. My husband was being goofy and took a few solo shots which makes me laugh.

Is there anything that you would change?

The only thing I would change is I wished I would have hired a day-of-coordinator. While our photographer did a great job getting all the shots, I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to keep to the schedule with me being the point person. Our dinner started late and the caterer later shared he was worried that the food wasn’t going to be just right since he had planned to start an hour earlier. Having an outside person handle the timing of every event would have been helpful.

What is your best advice to anyone planning a wedding?

My advice is to have a detailed plan with monthly to-do lists but BE FLEXIBLE if you have to adjust your deadlines. I realized I created a lot of deadlines for myself and would be disappointed if I didn’t hit them. However, no one knew I had all these deadlines! Once you nail down your date, venue(s), and caterer, the rest is just small details.

I met Stacy when I was working as the staff photographer at Girl’s Rock Camp and was so excited to photograph her and Mary’s wedding! It was a day full of love, inclusion, family and music!

How did you meet and fall in love?

We met through mutual friends at Hell’s Kitchen (Pride Weekend). We lived over an hour apart at the time, so our relationship developed slowly through phone calls, messages, and weekend visits.

How did you choose your venue?

Stacy had played music at Corner Coffee in the past and knew of the building (with the warehouse space for rent, called the Neu Neu Event Center) through the coffee shop. We wanted something non-traditional where we had control over what food, music, etc. went into the event.

Thoughts leading up to your wedding day?

A lot of thoughts about getting everything taken care of in time!

What was your favorite part of the day?

We loved getting ready together (with our moms too), and the ceremony. (this was also my favorite part of the day, especially when Stacy sang to Mary)

What is each of your favorite images from your wedding? What makes it your favorite?

We both love them all, and how the energy and love of the day/evening were captured.

Is there anything that you would change?

Mary says she wishes we would’ve brought containers for leftover food (to be able to bring leftovers home).

What is your best advice to anyone planning a wedding?

Try to stay true to what just the two of you want your celebration to be, and not allow outside influences to dictate everything.

How did you meet and fall in love?

Joshua and I had our first class of college together (Mandarin Chinese) at CSB/SJU. We became good friends and spent most of our days together. Everyone knew I had a super big crush on Josh, but he didn’t even consider me an option because he thought I was too cool and was slightly intimated by me. One night after a few drinks… we got a little closer and we’ve been together for 9 years now!

How did you choose your venue?

1. My parents have a beautiful property that has the room to host a larger wedding (something I wanted) 2. Didn’t have to pay for the venue and it was perfect for my Minnesota backyard summer wedding!

Thoughts leading up to your wedding day?

We were excited but worried about the weather. It ended up being perfect despite the 100 degree heat the day before. The thunderstorm/tornado warnings the morning of the wedding killed the heat and left behind beautiful clouds for the photos!

What was your favorite part of the day?

There was several favorites!  The ceremony was great because we ran everything. We didn’t hire anyone outside our family so very personal and heartfelt. Justin had one of the best best man speeches I’ve ever heard! The dance party was lively. My mom brought extra champagne out later despite her “no glass by the pool” rule that has been implemented since we’ve lived there and of course a bottle was dropped. Josh and I connected eyes and were like… oh, shiiiit* but when it hit the cement it didn’t break! It bounced back up in the air and our friend Kevin caught it and the champagne proceeded to fly out of the open bottle drenching him entirely! And at the end of the night, we played “Piano man” as a CSB/SJU tradition where everyone gets into a big circle and sings, the men drop their pants and sway in their boxers and Joshua and I were dancing in the middle (it sounds silly but was super cool by the pool with all the lights)

What is each of your favorite images from your wedding?

I have sooo many favorites:

1) We each have our own artistic photo—me-my favorite getting ready photo with the make-up spray and light behind making a beautiful mist

Josh with the smoke of his cigar surrounding him—so cool and artistic shots!

2) Couple shots-I love how it captures the vibe of our wedding with our classy outfits but wooden cow fence at the farm, the angle of the fence is great

I love this one with the yellows of the meadow and green plains in the back, just beautiful.

I love that you captured me singing and Josh watching me during our first dance

I’m so happy you got a perfect picture of the twirl of my dress-one of the reasons I loved my dress.

I love the image of with the guys smoking cigars, love the angle you took this photo at

The photos of us doing the conga line around the pool is awesome! You can see the reflection of everyone dancing in the pool.

Is there anything that you would change? Besides the minor hiccup of the gold cart accident—nope!

What is your best advice to anyone planning a wedding? You can NOT plan for everything and things WILL happen that suck and are out of your control, so just have fun, dance, and trash your dress!
