“You have to, take a deep breath. and allow the music to flow through you. Revel in it, allow yourself to awe. When you play allow the music to break your heart with its beauty.” ― Kelly White
GRRR mission: “To empower girls through the art of music.“
It was another great week at the girls rock n roll retreat! I could go on and on (and did last week )! It was so inspiring to watch these teachers and girls come together again this week. They formed 8 new bands, including the youngest band ever called On the Edge ( who also had the favorite song of camp called “rock and roll candy”). The other bands were 6:60, Sincerely, the Kids, Poparockqzee, The Final Beginning, The Dark Rays, Lock and Key and Kryptonite. Last week when we did their band photos, we found this great red chair at the school. I was at a coffee shop a few doors down from the school and saw a super cool yellow chair! I talked them into letting me use it for a couple of hours for this week’s band photos!
I missed it last week, but this week I got to be part of the self defense class with Lisa Van Ahn. It was such a great lesson to the girls, not only about how to defend themselves and feel their “girl power” but a way to live authentically, with purpose and intention. Her lesson was very little about the physical act of defending yourself but how to: think, feel and act.
1.Think-to defend yourself you have to love yourself. You have to think enough of yourself to use your voice and stand firm in the power that you have.
2. Feel-you have to face your fears. You have to trust your feelings, pay attention to them and speak up when you need to. Run away when you are scared. Your feelings are real and valid.
3. Act-be the positive change in the world. Be yourself. When you trust your feelings you can act on them with power and conviction.
For me it was such a huge part of what they are teaching the girls this week (along with becoming rock stars). I feel profoundly blessed to have been part of this incredible group of women and to have documented these two weeks!
If you would like to see all of the photos from the week, they are here. They are available to purchase and all of the money will be donated to GRRR, to support their programs. If you prefer to purchase digital files you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
