“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls”.-Pablo Picasso
I LOVE the Varsity theater. The light is beautiful! In fact one of the venues I most want to shoot a wedding at in the Twin Cities is the Varsity. It is one of my favorite places to see live music.
Operating as a string of monthly club nights—modeled on the legendary Communion night in Notting Hill, London where the company was born, the new initiative will bring a different line-up of artists to Minneapolis’s Varsity Theater as well as eight other cities each month: New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Bloomington, Louisville, Nashville, Madison and Rock Island.
I was just telling a friend that I would be a terrible music reviewer because I really only care about the light, venue and entertainment factor. I love almost all shows that I go to. Communion was a wonderful night of music and with lovely light. Charlie Parr makes me wish I could play the guitar. Black Diet is wildly fun and has great energy ( I’ve been listening to their music online as I edited these photos). I saw them last month at First Avenue and mainly went to the communion show so I could see them again. El le faunt was creepy, strange circus music but visually dynamic. And Pearl and the Beard was a band out of Brooklyn and their vocals were memorizing. I highly recommend checking out the Communion show next month! It will be on April 15th and the artists are Sturgill Simpson, Johnny Stimson, BBGun and Field Report.
